Tuesday July 6, 1943. Battle of Kula Gulf is fought in the darkness as a task group consisting of 3 cruisers and 4 Destroyers engages 10 Japanese Destroyers' carrying troops and supplies to Kolobangara, Solomon Islands. United States naval vessel sunk: Light cruiser HELENA CL-50, by Destroyer torpedoes. Japanese naval vessel sunk: destroyer NIIZUKI, by naval gunfire, Destroyer, grounded and abandoned.
TBS "Talk-Between-Ships": Very high frequency shipborne equipment of medium power, used for ships tactically maneuvering.
I dubbed St. Louis "The Maiden" in my book. Navy censors wouldn't let use her real name. I had to call Honolulu "The Flag". Funny, censors let me call Helena by her right name -- Duncan Norton-Taylor, 1978

At the harbor entrance a midget submarine fired two torpedoes at St. Louis, exploding harmlessly on an intervening coral reef, drenching her. Missed by an aerial bomb that did not explode and strafed by enemy planes, that day St. Louis earned the nickname "Lucky Lou", officially credited with downing three Japanese planes on the way out.
